You can enter first person of another player (and yourself) as long as they played on your console. Otherwise you can only view third person. It doesn’t matter if its on XboxLIVE or system link. Just FYI.

And if you ever read the Weekly Updates on Bungie.net, you would know why the melee system is still flawed. I think that it is a lot more fair, in terms of catering to the public as a whole and not the relative few who don’t like it at all. You just can’t please everyone.

You said that you are unable to re-enter first-person view on your own player once you have left it. That is not true.

After selecting your player again, you will be in 3rd person view. But you can switch back to first-person by pushing down on your right joystick.

Maybe you already learned that since publishing this article, but I don’t follow it or anything. I just ran across it while doing a Google search for “linux firefox slow “bungie.net”” or something like that.

@mr lots of numbers: Sure, the person who swings first should win and still does. The ‘contest’ in only activated if the hits were within 100ms (1/10th of a second) of each other. If there’s no 2nd swing withing 100ms, the first person wins. If they used dedicated servers for the games, it would be simple to just have the first one win without needing the lag there, but since the games are served peer to peer, whoever is serving the game will ALWAYS have the fastest connection (since he’s essentially connected to himself). shrug I like the new system. I’m sure it could be better but I think it works pretty good.

Well, they STILL need to fix the melee system. All they did was make it “not as” bad. It should be like it was in halo 2, plain and simple. First hit wins. If there is server lag, the player with the faster (i.e., BETTER) connection should win.

@ranrodion: You can press up or down on the d-pad to switch players, but as soon as you do, it exits first person mode and puts your in 3rd person behind the next person in the list.

Actually, bungie said something about the FPS in theatre. It had something to do around this:

In all/most online games, to make online smoother, only the players around you are regularly updated. The players miles away are not updated every second. This is to reduce lag or something

Hence, players farther away will look jittery, like one moment here, one moment there. In 3rd person, they can smoothen the animations out or sumthin, but in 1st person, the true picture will be revealed.

Hence, to make FPS smoother they’d have to constantly update everyone.

That would make matches more like lag circuses. Thus, Bungie settled for the 3rd person instead of a broken 1st person.

Of course, fps would’ve been great, no doubt about that Actually, at first I thought there WAS an fps view.
